GODDARD APPLIED SCIENCES

SEMINAR SERIES

Dr. Nirav Patel, DoD Defense Innovation Unit

with Ritwik Gupta of DIU and Phillip SeLegue of Cal Fire

Implementing the xView2 Prize Winning Algorithms during

the 2020-2021 California Wildfire Seasons

Monday, November 15 @ 1 p.m. ET – (MS Teams link below)

[Nirav Nikunj Patel, Ph.D.]

In the wake of natural disasters, responders must assess damage to buildings, an activity that is time-consuming and dangerous. In Fall 2019, the Defense Innovation Unit (Office of the Undersecretary of Defense Research and Engineering), Cal Fire, and other partners ran the xView2 Prize Challenge to crowdsource computer vision algorithms for building damage assessment using satellite imagery. This talk will focus on the challenges/triumphs in implementing the winning algorithms in operational contexts during the 2020-2021 fire seasons in California.

Dr. Nirav Nikunj Patel is a geospatial data scientist and Project Manager at the Department of Defense (DoD) Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for the Space and Artificial Intelligence portfolios. Nirav leads the Peacetime Indications and Warnings effort, which fosters DoD adoption of U.S commercial small satellite collection capabilities and associated analytics, and he leads/assists with Prize Challenges such as xView2. Nirav was formerly a DEVELOP intern at NASA Langley and researcher at NASA Ames.
