Project Description:
The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for a recent Masters or Doctoral
student in its Environmental Data Science & Systems science area
(http://www.esd.ornl.gov/research/environ_data_systems/index.shtml). We
are seeking a recent (within the last 5 years) Masters or Doctoral
graduate interested in applying programming skills to the development of
environmental informatics tools (particularly WebGIS tools) and the
distribution of environmental data. The candidate will join an
enthusiastic team of programmers and scientists working on the ORNL
Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) for biogeochemical dynamics and
the Modeling and Synthesis Thematic Data Center (MAST-DC). The ORNL DAAC
(http://www.daac.ornl.gov) is one of eight DAACs for NASA's Earth
Observing System and is responsible for gathering, distributing and
adding value to biogeochemical data used in validation of NASA satellite
data products and earth science program. MAST-DC
(http://nacp.ornl.gov/mast-dc/) supports the North American Carbon
Program by providing data products and data management service needed
for modeling and synthesis activities. 

The primary duties of the selected candidate will be
1. To perform GIS analysis to retrieve, store, manipulate, process
geospatial data. Familiarly with GIS analysis software such as ArcMAP,
ArcView, ENVI, GRASS or any other popular GIS/Image processing package
is expected for this duty.
2. Deploy GIS data in a WebGIS environment using ArcIMS, ArcSDE and
Minnesota Mapserver. Familiarity with AreIMS, ArcSDE, one or more
relational database systems (SQL*Server preferred), OGC tools, and
Minnesota Mapserver are highly desired, Familiarity with Internet
programming languages such as JavaScript, Perl, HTML are also highly
desired.

Experience deploying tools which implement OGC standards such as WMS,
WCS, and WFS is desired. Candidates should also have demonstrated
capability in preparing and deploying tools for dissemination of
Geospatial data in a web-based environment using WebGIS and other tools.
Experience or a degree in some environmental-related science (e.g.,
ecology, environmental science, biology, soils, geology, meteorology,
geography) is highly desirable. The candidate should enjoy working in a
team environment.

This position is affiliated with ESD and ORNL but the successful
candidate will be an employee of Oak Ridge Associated Universities under
their Postgraduate Program. The position is for 1 year with the
opportunity to extend for an additional two years depending on
performance. 

Qualifications: Masters and/or Ph.D degree required in Earth and
Geosciences or Computer Sciences 
Other Requirements include strong GIS skills, demonstrated capability in
preparing and deploying geospatial data in a web-based environment using
WebGIS and other tools.
