All
On 15 and 16 October, a consortium of organizations including USGS, locally-based members of the ESIP Federation, the Foundation for Earth Science and 10 local units of government in Virginia and West Virginia will be holding the "Shenandoah Valley Natural Systems Symposium" aimed at answering science questions relating to water quality and quantity problems in the Shenandoah River and creating a science plan upon which local elected officials can base corrective policy decisions. In addition to USGS, EPA, NOAA, CREW (the NASA funded WaterNet project) and WATERS (the NSF funded RS Hydrology network) will be making presentations on what resources (data, models, decision-support tools, technical assistance, etc.) they have that might be helpful in the development of the Shenandoah Valley science plan. I view the Symposium as a great opportunity both to work on an collaborative inter-agency, inter-disciplinary basis in an important issue area and to gain experience in matching the resources of the members of the Federation with the needs of real-life end users. You are invited to submit posters that show how your data, models or decision support tools have been used to study water quality and/or water quality issues in other areas or how your resources might help decision-makers in the Shenandoah Valley to understand their water-related issues. The impact of air pollution on water quality is also of significant interest. All posters should be sent to me at the address below before COB on Friday, October 12, 2007. If you would like to attend the Symposium itself, please call me at the numbers listed below. Regards, Dick
