CALL FOR PAPERS - 1
European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2011, Vienna Austria, 3-8 April 2011
Earth & Space Science Informatics (ESSI); Atmospheric Sciences (AS); Tools for Climate Studies (CL)
EGU Session ESSI 3 / AS 4.17 / CL 4.8 : Climate Information Integration
Conveners: David Arctur, Bryan Lawrence, Stefano Nativi, Sandro Fiore
The current climate debate is highlighting the importance of free, open, authoritative sources of quality climate data that are available for peer review and for collaborative purposes. It is increasingly important to allow disparate organizations around the world to share climate data in an open manner, and to perform dynamic processing of climate data via web based services, using common "community agreed" standards without having to change their internal systems or the language that they use internally to describe their data.
We encourage discussion of methods for collection and preservation of provenance metadata, which is crucial to long-term and interdisciplinary use of climate data. We also wish to identify archives of quality climate data, and make these available for interdisciplinary work. Focus will be on applications and opportunities for enhancing existing data exchange standards for use with climate data.
Deadline for EGU2011 abstracts to be submitted: 10 January 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS - 2

Earth & Space Science Informatics (ESSI) Section
EGU ESSI Session 11: Real Use of Standards and Technologies (RUST)
Conveners: John van de Vegte, David Arctur
ESSI-RUST is a session where standards and technologies meet end users by demonstrating leading-edge and ready-to-use services and applications. Focus will be on (but not exclusively) OGC based services, data interchange encodings (GML, netCDF, HDF), CF-conventions and their use in applications and services. Future challenges in RUST shall also be addressed.
The intended audience will be ESSI and all EGU divisions dealing with cross-domain information exchange that would benefit from use of standardized technologies. The session should act as catalyzer for:
- End users, becoming aware of existing technologies that are ready to use in their own domain.
- Developers implementing standards for services and applications that can benefit from demonstrated solutions.
- Standardization bodies, to consider refining standards based on real user experience.
Authors of accepted oral abstracts are requested to show results via live demonstrations on self-provided computers; internet connectivity is expected in the meeting room / poster area. Slide show (simulated) presentations may also be prepared in case of network difficulties. A Splinter Session will be organized to permit additional demonstrations to be shown that could not be accommodated in the main session.
Interested participants are encouraged to submit their abstracts for oral or poster presentation on any aspects relevant to ESSI-RUST.
Keywords: Standards, technologies, demonstration, applications, OGC, GML, netCDF, HDF, CF-convention

EGU ESSI Session 19: Information Fusion: Issues, Barriers and Approaches
Conveners: David Arctur, Peter Fox, Lorenzo Bigagli, Laura Díaz
Merging disparate data sources and models for multidisciplinary study is an increasingly urgent need. Key drivers for this direction of research include requirements for improved situational awareness; the vital need for enhanced preparedness and swift, appropriate response to natural and manmade disasters; global climate change; and a wide range of other societal and environmental circumstances. Technology - including standards - for meeting these ends has advanced rapidly, but cultural, institutional, and related issues can impede our ability to apply it. We welcome submissions that describe successful integrative data analyses, with descriptions of specific solutions for overcoming barriers and obtaining cooperation and coordination in multidisciplinary settings.
