Call for AGU Abstracts: Workflows for Ocean Science Requirements

We invite you to submit an abstract for the following session at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 3-7 December 2012 in San Francisco.

IN047: Workflows for Ocean Science Requirements

Main Sponsor: Earth and Space Science Informatics Focus Group

Related Sponsoring Sections: Ocean Sciences; Tectonophysics; Volcanology, Geochemistry and Petrology; Global Environmental Change

Organizers:
Dawn Wright, Environmental Systems Research Institute and Oregon State University
Mike McCann, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
Yolanda Gil, University of Southern California

Session Description:
Workflows are a critical ingredient in designing and implementing useful/effective solutions to meet ocean science requirements. Requirements vary by community with regard to how data are acquired and maintained, what transformations are needed for assimilation into various databases, and what guidance/recommendations exist for appropriate chaining of methods, tools, models, and data resources into specific workflow steps. Papers welcome on ocean science data, imagery, and numerical models that specifically explain new workflows; that present workflows to facilitate geospatial query and analysis of oceanographic data, including the development of improved web-based geoprocessing services, and associated maps as communicated and persisted in apps. We welcome contributions from disciplines throughout the ocean sciences, the GIScience community, and the NSF EarthCube community to discuss related opportunities, challenges, and solutions.

Keywords: GIScience; Interoperability; Spatial analysis and representation; Workflows

Submission information: http://fallmeeting.agu.org/2012/scientific-program/abstract-submission-policies/
Please submit your abstract by AGU's very firm deadline of 8 AUGUST 2012.
The first author must be an AGU member or sponsored by a member.
All submissions must be accompanied by a paid abstract and registration fee.

AGU will schedule this session as either oral or poster or both based on the number and quality of abstracts submitted. We therefore urge you to consider participating with us and please feel free to FORWARD this announcement to other lists, colleagues, and students! Authors will be informed in September regarding the date and format (oral or poster) of your contribution.

Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

Call for AGU Abstracts: Advancing Partnerships and Human Networks in the Era of Big Data

We invite you to submit an abstract for the following session at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 3-7 December 2012 in San Francisco.

IN006: Advancing Partnerships and Human Networks in the Era of Big Data

Main Sponsor: Earth and Space Science Informatics Focus Group

Related Sponsors: Ocean Sciences Section, Tectonophysics Section

Organizers:
Dawn Wright, Environmental Systems Research Institute and Oregon State University
Cyndy Chandler, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Andy Maffei, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Confirmed Invited Presenter: Peter Fox, Tetherless World Constellation, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Session Description:
Big data, particularly from terrestrial sensor networks and ocean observatories exceed the processing capacity and speed of conventional database systems and architectures, and requiring a higher dimensionality and interoperability of datasets. They are leading to a new paradigm of scientific discovery beyond empiricism, analysis, and simulation to a fourth where insight is discovered through the manipulation and exploration of large data sets. Successfully addressing the scientific challenges of Big Data requires integrative and innovative approaches to analyzing, modeling, and developing extensive and diverse data sets, but is also critically dependent on effective collaborative partnerships across disciplines, across generational practices and cultures of the physical, social, and computer sciences. This involves organizations of human linkages between system architects, data managers, and users, as well as the technical infrastructure to link data and people together for management, coordination, collaborative science, and cyberinfrastructure governance. We welcome contributions from disciplines throughout the Earth and Space Science informatics to discuss related opportunities, challenges, and solutions, as well as emerging informatics technologies.

Keywords: GIScience; Community modeling frameworks; Data and information governance; International collaboration; Social networks
