Using IPython Notebook and Wakari for Earth Science
Information workflows"
While science is built on the foundation of openness and
reproducibility, recreating the workflow of another scientist workflow
is typically a challenging task. In the geosciences, scientific and
technical analyses that involve large amounts of data are usually
conducted using products such as Matlab and IDL. These products are
popular because they allow for interactive exploration of data via
high-level, procedural programming languages. The base products
include tools for a variety of common tasks, such as routine
statistics, plotting, time series analysis and image processing, and
more specialized tools are available, either as optional packages
purchased from vendors, developed by the scientists themselves, or
obtained from others in the community. To reproduce another
scientist's analysis, you typically need to buy a license (e.g. Matlab
or IDL), install the base software on your computer, buy licenses for
additional toolboxes, and then locate and install the correct versions
of add-on community tools that will allow you to execute the
workflow. Thus whether you want to share your processing approach
with a colleague, a group of students, or test another scientists
workflow, the expense and time required are impediments to scientific
progress.

Fortunately, with the advent of powerful open-source procedural
languages, browser technology and cloud computing, impediments to
scientific reproducibility are being lifted. Languages like Python
and R provide the same high-level interactive environment for
scientific analysis. The IPython notebook allows a user to
interactively use a remote Python (or R, or even Matlab) installation
using only a web browser. Wakari provides custom python environments
to be deployed on the cloud and then shared with other users via the
IPython Notebook.
