Khalsa-ji:
Understood. I wonder if a way can be found to run a session or somehow bring the organizers’ attention to this issue. I see that Puneet Kishor is on the PC. He is from Creative Commons, and I met him recently at an Earthcube workshop. Perhaps we can raise this issue with him.

Hi Chaitan,

The same holds true for hydromet and glaciological data acquired by India. But I think the whole point of holding the conference in India was to try and start turning the situation around.

Dear Rama:
I am quite familiar with the situation regarding data sharing in India.
India is one of the worst offenders when it comes to data sharing—yet they are apparently eager to run a conference on this topic!
I have mentioned this issue to some of the key folks back there—when I was there for workshops funded by the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum and for an NSF workshop on an Indoflux network. For things like carbon flux measurements and gravity data—just as examples—India is literally a “black hole”.
Several of the science results that Indian scientists will claim in India were made possible because they had access to international data (a lot of it is US)—because there is no Indian data!
I don’t have much hope of any of this changing any time soon. But it might be a good idea to keep pushing on this issue.

Cheers,
