DESCRIPTION
This position provides broad information technology support to the projects of the Geological Data Center (GDC), a facility at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Responsibilities include 1) Design and develop moderately complex code, including assessing requirements and supporting end users; 2) Process and quality control oceanographic data by both programmatic and manual means, including extending and managing processing scripts, and writing technical documentation; 3) Administer a Joomla website, including upgrades, providing technical support for staff managing website content, and doing systems administration on the servers; 4) Manage oceanographic data systems in both file-based and relational databases and, occasionally, an archive of analog data items; 5) Administer computer systems, including managing users, ensuring security, and diagnosing system problems. Will work effectively both individually and as part of a team, communicate with a broad spectrum of users, prepare written and verbal reports and presentations, and manage multiple conflicting demands to meet deadlines.

OVERVIEW
The GDC has been curating and providing access to oceanographic data for more than 40 years. In the current era, the emphasis is on collaborative projects that create integrated access to well-described oceanographic data on institutional, national, and international scales. At present, the GDC has three main emphases. First, it manages the technical infrastructure of the Science Support Office of the International Ocean Discovery Program, including an online data submission and access system, a proposal submission system, and an informational website. Second, it participates in the Rolling Deck to Repository Program, ensuring that data from the US academic fleet of research vessels is routinely captured, cataloged and described, and submitted to the appropriate national repository for long-term public access. Finally, it curates and provides access to historic data from Scripps vessels.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant major (Oceanography, Computer Science, Library Science, Geology, etc); and/or equivalent experience/training.

Demonstrated experience writing original code in PHP. (Required)

Proven experience with Unix-based systems (Apache, monitoring systems, running/writing scripts, data backups, unix verification, troubleshooting, etc).(Required)

Demonstrated ability to install, configure and modify moderately complex software packages. Knowledge of tools for software development, installation and maintenance.(Required)

Knowledge of website administration and management using a CMS, preferably with Joomla

Knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL).

Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
