Hello all!

It’s that time of year again - fall meeting abstract season! Please consider submitting an abstract to one of the following sessions for the AGU fall meeting, proposed by myself and some colleagues who are involved with EarthCube. If you have any questions about either of these sessions, please feel free to contact me or any of my co-conveners (copied on this message). Remember, if you submit prior to July 29, you have a chance to win a free meeting registration!

IN013: Creating Effective Information Access and Infrastructure to Resolve Complex Science Research Questions

The sharing of open data is permeating science. Our ability to handle data shared across disciplines, especially big data, is evolving rapidly. The evolution is most effective within disciplines that have common frameworks and a shared culture for data management. The new challenge is reaching across broader disciplinary divides, creating effective information access, and supporting information infrastructures to enable the resolution of complex scientific research questions. For example, the NSF-supported EarthCube program seeks to provide better solutions and tools that transform the conduct of geoscience research. New and evolving technological solutions developed through such a community-driven process will be key in addressing the cross-disciplinary “big picture” issues facing our society, such as climate change, water resources, evolving energy production, and natural hazard prediction and mitigation. This session will focus on future directions in multidisciplinary big data in an open data environment that can provide new insights for the geosciences community.

IN021: Facilitating Open Science and Data through Scientist Engagement and Evolving Technology. Cross-Listed: PA - Public Affairs

Complex scientific research questions that address modern societal challenges, particularly those related to Earth systems, require a data-enabled interdisciplinary strategy. Community-driven cyberinfrastructure efforts and architecture are being developed to support scientists at all stages of the research endeavor. An example is the NSF-supported EarthCube program, which seeks to provide better solutions and tools that transform the conduct of data-enabled geosciences research. Such efforts will facilitate global data discovery and knowledge management, and will help support interoperability and data integration across disciplines. Science community involvement is critical to the successful development, dissemination, and implementation of new technological approaches for geoscience research. This session invites papers that demonstrate how specific geoscience topics can be improved through advances in integrating technology and data management. Examples will showcase the successes of the open science vision and will highlight how geoscience research can radically change as a result.
