Hi All -

This seems to be the "Year of Data" at AGU. There are a number of
activities and sessions at the AGU Fall Meeting will highlight the
increasing importance of data and data science. ESIP President, Peter Fox,
was named an AGU Fellow
<http://news.agu.org/press-release/american-geophysical-union-announces-2015-fellows/>!
We also want to congratulate Dawn Wright, Esri, on being the 2015 Leptoukh
lecture
<http://honors.agu.org/scientific-contribution/earth-and-space-science-informatics/>.
The lecture will be Tuesday, Dec 15, 2:40-3:40, Moscone West 3014.

Monday evening will feature a Conversation with DJ Patil, the Chief Data
Scientist of the United States (in Moscone South room 104 at 615).
https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm15/meetingapp.cgi/Session/10058 DJ was
appointed to the White House in early 2015 and is responsible for helping
shape US policies and practices around data and technology. DJ was
previously the Chief Scientist at LinkedIn among other leading data and
technology positions. We are looking for good questions. Please email me
questions, if you have ideas.

>From Tuesday-Thursday afternoon at 330-430, there will be panel discussions
in the exhibit hall as part of a “data fair” aimed at connecting
researchers with repositories, data providers and facilities. ESIP will be
featured on the Thursday afternoon panel - Making Data Matter: Improving
Data Practices in the Geosciences. I am moderating a panel that will
include Cyndy Chandler, BCO-DMO, Peter Fox, TWC-RPI, Ted Habermann, the HDF
Group and Jeff de La Beaujardiere, NOAA. Each of the panelist represents an
ESIP type - data centers, researchers, application developers and our
sponsors. Further details on the program are here:
https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2015/event/agu-data-fair
This fair will also include a map of exhibitors that are data repositories
and other information.

Finally, Rebecca posted a shareable summary of ESIP activities at AGU
<http://esipfed.org/node/8857> and a crowdsourced Google Spreadsheet
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16-JGyMhpsrZ1cliN6m4XBduEkzpUnhwohCOn1NpH9PQ/edit?usp=sharing>,
to share all the sessions and activities that may be of interest. There is
also a “data swirl” for the first time, connecting many sessions on data
(see the Fall Meeting program
<https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm15/meetingapp.cgi/Index/CB_SwirlTopics~11582>
).

Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Erin
