Subject: Disasters Cluster telecom Thursday 9/7 - 4:00pm ET

We are back on schedule with our regular 1st Thursday telecom.

With an active hurricane season upon us, I would like to talk about identifying ESIP members’ data products and/or services that might address the needs addressed in the Hurricane Matthew use case presented by Kari Hicks of Duke Energy at the ESIP Summer Meeting in July.

The briefing we discussed last week (and available at the google docs link listed below) outlines the process we’re following for candidate data sets. Ideally I hope we can identify 1-3 different candidate data products or services to evaluate with the AHC folks and explore moving successfully evaluated products through the ORL assessment.

Furthermore, Kari is actively seeking data sets that might help her team respond to Hurricane Irma now, especially information that relates to damage assessment. We can discuss next steps for anyone who has candidate data sets or services. Please join the telecom:

The ESIP poster pdf in the link below is the final. Let me know if you would like a like to the 17MB pptx file.

We will have our regular Disasters cluster call on Thursday, Sep 7 at 4:00pm ET. I would like to discuss where we go from the ESIP Summer Meeting…candidate data sets for the Hurricane Matthew Use Case? Refining the attributes and criteria for trusted data and ORLs?

Best,
Karen

Our telecom this week is on the 5th Thursday at our regular 4pm ET and we will discuss the upcoming Disasters Risk Reduction across the Americas (DRRA) Regional Summit in Buenos Aires Sep 3-8. Dr Susana Adamo from SEDAC will represent our ESIP Cluster. We are grateful to have received travel funding to support our participation from both NASA’s Applied Sciences program and ESIP. Additionally there are other ESIP Disasters Cluster members who will be attending in other capacities, so I look forward to getting feedback in October. It will be very interesting to learn about the challenges and approaches to disasters management in the Americas and share some of our clusters insights. We are finalizing the poster draft before our telecom as it goes to print tomorrow.

Many thanks to Susana, Maggi, Ken, Dave and Sean (who provided our 2016 poster) for helping me create the draft poster. On Thursday we will also discuss the briefing that Susana will make on our behalf to the session on “Interoperability of spatial information systems in disaster risk management”.
