Dear colleagues,

Please note two recent announcements from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF):

  1. The Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI)<https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/cyberinfrastructure-sustained-scientific-innovation-cssi> program has published a new solicitation: NSF 22-632<https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf22632&org=NSF>. The proposal submission deadline is December 16, 2022 (and annually thereafter on December 1). CSSI supports integrated cyberinfrastructure services in support of evolving research community needs. You can get a sense of typical CSSI projects by browsing projects that have been funded by this program<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/advancedSearchResult?ProgEleCode=8004&BooleanElement=Any&BooleanRef=Any&ActiveAwards=true#results>. This year, CSSI is offering 3 tracks of support:
     * Elements (up to $600,000 total budget for up to 3 years)
     * Framework Implementations (between $600,001 and $5,000,000 total budget for 3-5 years)
     * Transition to Sustainability (up to $1,000,000 total budget for up to 2 years)
  2. NSF recently announced a $20 million investment in entrepreneurial fellowships<https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNSF/bulletins/32dce2c> through a multi-year cooperative agreement with Activate.org<https://www.activate.org/>. The Activate Fellows supported by NSF will be scientists and engineers from a variety of backgrounds and regions across the U.S. who will translate research breakthroughs to new products and services with broad societal benefits. Over two years, Entrepreneurial Fellows will receive training and at least $350,000 in direct support, plus access to specialized research facilities and equipment through Activate. Application information is available here: https://www.activate.org/apply. The deadline to apply is October 31, 2022.

Please also note the upcoming deadline for NSF's existing CyberTraining solicitation:

  1. The CyberTraining (Training-based Workforce Development for Advanced Cyberinfrastructure)<https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/training-based-workforce-development-advanced-cyberinfrastructure> program solicitation (NSF 22-574<https://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?WT.z_pims_id=505342&ods_key=nsf22574>) has an upcoming deadline on January 19, 2023 (and annually thereafter on the third Thursday in January). The CyberTraining program seeks to prepare, nurture, and grow the national scientific research workforce for creating, utilizing, and supporting advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) to enable and potentially transform fundamental science and engineering (S&E) research and education and contribute to the Nation's overall economic competitiveness and security. You can get a sense of typical CyberTraining projects by browsing projects that have been funded by this program<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/advancedSearchResult?ProgEleCode=044Y&BooleanElement=Any&BooleanRef=Any&ActiveAwards=true#results>. CyberTraining offers support for 3 project classes:
     * Pilot Projects (up to $300,000 total budget for up to 2 years)
     * Implementation Projects (Small with total budgets up to $500,000 or Medium with total budgets up to $1,000,000; for up to 4 years)
     * CI Professional (CIP) Projects (up to 2 full-time equivalents (FTEs) per institution and 4 FTEs total with durations up to 5 years)

If you have questions about any of these opportunities, I encourage you to reach out directly to the personnel listed on the respective webpages.

Best regards,
Raleigh Martin
