Hello ESIP Cloud Computing Cluster Members!

We are excited to welcome speakers Steve Olson and Shane Mill of National
Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) at National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to present on *NOAA's*
*Environmental
Data Retrieval (EDR) API.* We are excited about how NOAA is pioneering a
data access API which provides a single interface to many complex and
differentiated collections. NOAA is enabling cloud-optimized data access to
both small and large scale datasets through cloud-optimized formats such as
Zarr.

*Abstract:*
NOAA's implementation of the Open Geospatial Consortium's (GC)
Environmental Data Retrieval (EDR) API provides programmatic access to a
wide variety of data, from ground-based sensors to large scale satellite
datasets such as Himawari. The beauty of the OGC EDR API specification is
that it’s very flexible and extensible and delivers on its goal for serving
multi-dimensional datasets. NOAA emphasized interoperability through
development of a RESTful API, acknowledging that not everyone is a python
developer.

NOAA's EDR API implementation showcases how a platform for cloud-optimized
data access does not rely on one cloud-optimized data format, but leverages
many different tools to provide unified access to heterogeneous data. The
API does not require data to be stored in Zarr, however the program has
started to prototype with numerical weather prediction data as well as
satellite data and has found that chunking is very necessary for managing
the data as well as for improving performance of data retrieval.

NOAA's EDR team will present on the implementation. A discussion of the
challenges they faced in designing the API and the planned next steps will
follow.

*Agenda:*

   - 5-10 minutes - Announcements: Working sessions, ESIP Summer Meeting
Planning, Open Call for other announcements
   - 20-30 minutes - Presentation
   - 20-30 minutes - Discussion questions

Looking forward to seeing y'all there!
Aimee and Sudhir
