> Earth science research is increasingly dependent on diverse datasets generated from a variety of platforms and instruments/sensors to achieve adequate spatial/temporal coverage and to provide comprehensive process understanding. The science value of observational datasets is limited when the measurement uncertainty and consistency are not adequately defined. Measurement consistency is especially important when a parameter is measured by multiple instruments. A fundamental challenge is to capture and describe uncertainty and consistency information tailored to each measurement and sampling type, that is, in-situ, remote sensing, or other types of observations. NASA’s Data Quality Working Group (DQWG) recently made innovative recommendations for providing remote sensing measurement quality information. This session expands the scope of DQWG and solicits presentations with examples of the capture and use of complex measurement uncertainties and/or consistencies within existing metadata standards and use cases demonstrating the needs to extend current standards or develop new metadata standards.
