The new Comm. ACM has an interesting paper on a system
that ORNL has implemented to deal with provenance of data
collected by automated sensors in a building. The data are
apparently used to develop an understanding of energy use
in the building. The paper is
Hensley, Z., Sanyal, J., and New, J., 2014: Provenance in
Sensor Data Management, CACM, Vol. 57, No. 2, pp. 55-62,
DOI:10.1145/2556647.2556657
It has an interesting discussion of the problems and data
structures they used in their design, although their citations
do not include the W3C PROV recommendations. There
appears to be a useful discussion about how to present
provenance information to users. At the same time, it doesn't
look like there's much discussion of how to deal with provenance
information that wasn't collected as part of the original data
recording.
