[Esip-preserve] REQUEST - Data sets for workshop on dynamic data at the Winter meeting

Kerstin -

Exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of! I also have a large quantity of core analyses, geophysical well logs, thin sections, and photomicrograph data related to drill core, and I think we also have significant quantities of water sample data (which have a varying time component, as our water group returns to the same sites to retest).

I am happy to provide datasets from IEDA which range from shipboard sensor data to analytical sample-based data. For example, distributed datasets generated on the same sample or core can be a good example.

One thing that strikes me. I know much of our previous work has been focused on NOAA and NASA datasets, but I think that we can engage a much larger community if we begin to look at more datasets in the geosciences BEYOND traditional remote sensing. I've spoken with some colleagues who feel that ESIP (and other data preservation efforts within the geosciences) doesn't "speak" to them because they don't deal with remote sensing.

I'll think about this some more, and see if I can come up with some ideas. There's some rolling around in the back of my head but I haven't had enough coffee yet to articulate them!

Thanks Sarah.

I don’t manage data anymore so I can’t offer specific case studies, but I will suggest things that would be useful (and doable).

- We need to consider a data set that comes form many sources, like CTD casts from multiple ocean cruises. Or Met obs from many stations. Jeff DlB? Matt M?
- We need a basic remote sensing data set with continually changing algorithms and versions. Ruth? Curt?
- We need something where different parts of the data set are held in different places. Sky? Jeff?

cheers,

-m.

Hello Everyone,

Ruth and I are working on arranging a dynamic data workshop for the Winter ESIP meeting. It will be discussed during this month’s telecom (date in flux), and in advance of the call we would like to ask for your help. We are looking for input on two things. First we are looking for 3 data sets to use for the workshop, and second, we are looking for feedback as to what you would like out of the workshop.

The ESIP workshop will be customized to the community needs, so please review the materials below and either reply to the list with comments or attend the call to take part in the discussion.

To help you think about these issues, below are a few resources. The minutes from last month’s call where we discussed the workshop, the program from the previous workshop in London, and two white papers from the workshop leads.
