Jerry, This is great feedback! Very much appreciated. Thank you.

We will register for and pulse check with the COG (ESGF) as you recommended.

Best, Amanda

Amanda,
This works great! I had a few issues with the “get data” link. I think you should go to the COG site for the ana4MIPs reanalysis site now. It seems to work pretty well. You might note that to get data from ESGF you need a secure ID – so the user needs to register. The new COG (ESGF) site is at:https://earthsystemcog.org/projects/ana4mips/

I like the organization now – when I get a little more time, I’ll look at it more carefully. I think you plan to add other reanalyses – right? The ESGF (COG) site has other reanalyses too.

Jerry

Subject: Request Feedback by 29 Aug: "Kick-the-Tires" of this Ontology Driven Interactive Search Environment for Earth Science Tool -beta

Good Morning and Happy Monday,

As a follow-up action from the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) User Working Group (UWG) held on 24-25 June, we are reaching to you for candid feedback regarding this ontology driven search tool. Ontologies are a formal way to organize knowledge. One of the biggest challenges in making scientific data easy to find is the need for a common language to describe scientific terms so that a computer can scour the internet, automatically discover relevant information and be able to compare this information to similar data from other sources.

The ASDC is pleased to announce that a beta-version of the Ontology-Driven Interactive Search Environment for Earth Science (ODISEES) is now available online at http://odisees.larc.nasa.gov<http://odisees.larc.nasa.gov/>. ODISEES is a parameter-level search tool for finding and comparing variables from heterogeneous data sets, currently discoverable project/instrument variables include CERES, CALIPSO, and MODIS projects, as well as variables from the MERRA and ECMWF ERA-Interim reanalysis projects. Please notice, there are links to additional information and appropriate data ordering tools as well. Request your feedback on usability of this search tool and interface.

Please send comments/feedback by 29 August 2014 to Beth Huffer (ebhuffer at nasa.gov<mailto:ebhuffer at nasa.gov>) and Amanda Ross (amanda.l.ross-1 at nasa.gov<mailto:amanda.l.ross-1 at nasa.gov>), or click the "Contact Us" link at http://odisees.larc.nasa.gov<http://odisees.larc.nasa.gov/>.

Thank you in advance for the benefit of your insights and perspectives!

GOAL: To receive feedback from 15 people/groups to be consolidated and prioritized with ASDC and ESDIS Leadership

Summation of feedback below that has already been received: Additional thoughts/Insights? Agree/Disagree?

  1. "Continue to coordinate with the science team and UWG members to get feedback”
  2. "like the idea that spatial and temporal correlations between all parameters emphasize the need for instantaneous data”
  3. “that this is a great way to document the attributes that are very important and those that will be harder and harder to find in 15 years from now and this is a tool for letting people research metadata for those that are having a tough time getting metadata into their databases
  4. "When working to develop a tool to let data providers generate and upload their metadata, consider the GCMD. The GCMD offers a way to do a general search, which can drill down into different science key words once a user identifies the dataset they want, they can select it and get the DIF information- if there is a reverb connection/ or there are granules connected to the dataset, Reverb is used to drill down to see how to order the data. The ODISEES can sit on top of this but communication is needed. There is a dedicated staff for metadata quality – All data visible in the GCMD is publicly available, however, there is some flagged data that the GCMD has that is not publicly available.”
  5. "the GCMD has a huge database of over 31K entries and since it’s coverage is quite broad he would like to see ODISEES tool be an interface to it.”
  6. "Consider including a way to prioritize quality – possibly include it as a type of relationship”

Respectfully,

Amanda Ross
