[Esip-sustainabledm] AGU RoI related session?

Thanks, all, for your responses! Let me try to wrap those up:

I’m sorry I missed the meeting on Friday! I screwed up, it was simply not on my calendar. We meet on the 2nd Friday of the month?

Session conveners (or is it ‘chairs’? I think we’ll need to designate those roles):
Anne Wilson
Kerstin Lenhert
Nancy Ritchey (note correct spelling)
Corinna Gries

Clare, welcome to the group. Your thoughts are clearly in line with our thinking. (And, do you know Michelle Barker NeCTAR, and/or Andrew Treloar from ANDS? They are also interested in the topic. As they’re from your continent, I thought you might know them? Or maybe that’s silly, it is a large continent.)

Ruth, thanks for chiming in. I take both your points (indeed am happy to talk further about approaches). And I still think that a session of presentations that are simply data points in the broad space could play a helpful role, if only to raise awareness of the issue and help connect people.

Nancy, thanks so much for the Google doc and the rewrite. (I should have thought to make a Gdoc in the first place. Also, I just asked for permission to access that doc.) It looks like you incorporated Cyndy’s suggestions. The abstract is definitely improved.

Please recall that while the abstract will be available during the wider abstract submission process, it likely won't be available after that for attendees of the meeting. Attendees will have only to the title to go by in deciding whether to attend. (Crazy, sigh.) So, it’s best if the title can clearly state the purpose of the session. And, it can be fairly long. (See last year’s schedule for examples.) So, to toss out another point for discussion, here’s a new title suggestion:

Evaluating the Return on Investment of scientific data repositories: barriers, strategies, lessons learned, and recommendations

Not sure everyone saw my response yesterday. I updated the title & abstract based on the discussion. I've also created a googledoc<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rKGFjFbU23T8_7f9acIIw0lCBzHWdj96BnqQsrIwui0/edit> to allow collaboration.

Title: Return on Investment: The value of data repositories

Abstract:

The government spends billions of dollars to develop systems/instruments to
collect data allowing scientists to study and understand our planet. The
management and preservation of the data tends to be a last minute thought.
Data Repositories by design are equipped to support a portion of these data
based on discipline. However in the era of Big Data and dwindling funding,
Repositories are challenged with providing services to users who were not
an original stakeholders. These users heavily rely on the Repositories to
continue preserving the data and providing increasing services at no cost
to them. The users place a high value on the data and services, yet
Repositories have a difficult time developing accurate and defensible value
added to the data they steward.

A data repository's balance sheet can include measurable direct investments
and generated value, but also costs and benefits that must be estimated
from known indirect measures. In addition, there are
wider impacts that cannot easily be directly measured or even estimated (at
least currently). Moreover, despite a number of studies we still lack a
*core set* of standard metrics for valuing research data services, meaning
that each repository or data center plans and justifies its operations in
relative isolation from the lessons learned from its peers.

This session will explore methods for determining and possibly even
quantifying the return on investment that data centers provide.

Hello All

Thank you for including me in this discussion. For those who don’t know me, I am a project manager at the Australian National University’s National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and am looking at improving how we measure and communicate the value of research infrastructure, particularly for data repositories and services/tools that enable the effective use of data.

I agree that identifying some core standard measures would be a good outcome from the the session. Repositories can supplement these with additional measures that might suit their own circumstances. Perhaps, another aspect of the session would be to explore the problems/obstacles around data management, access and use so that we can confirm the value contribution that the Repositories make/could make. For example, exploring what Repositories could do to ‘shorten the time to science’ or, perhaps, improve other aspects of the research-outcome chain.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind?

Thanks for persisting! We had a meeting of the sustainable data management group on Friday but only three of us were there. I am not going to AGU but fully support further progress on our ideas.

Last sentences are awkward. How about:

A data center's balance sheet can include measurable direct investments and generated value, but also costs and benefits that must be estimated from known indirect measures. In addition, there are

Hi all,

There was a loud silence in response to my request for help with a title and abstract for an RoI related session. I will try again to stimulate some input by drafting a title and abstract, which is below. (I hope this doesn’t reinforce more silence! )

I did recall that last year, though abstracts describing the session were used in soliciting abstracts, in the end only the title of the session was provided in the meeting program. I am assuming it will be the same this year. So, the title can matter.

Title: How much is a data center worth? Determining the value and contributions of a data center

Abstract:

Data centers are being asked to provide better access and services for more and more datasets over time, with a commensurate increase in the number of users relying on those data centers for essential data and services. The difficulty is compounded by flat, inconsistent and/or unreliable funding for data centers.

It seems as if these data services are valuable to their users and to society, and may even show a positive return on investment. But making that argument clearly and unambiguously is a challenge. Data center expenses and contributions range from easily measurable direct investments and use, to stated values, to estimated values, and finally to wider impacts that can not be directly measured.

This session will explore methods for determining and possibly even quantifying the value that data centers provide, and/or measuring the return they provide.

Please provide comments and feedback. Thank you!

Anne

Great, Corinna, thank you!

That makes four: Anne Wilson, Kerstin Lehnert, Nancy Ritchie, Corinna Gries. Is that correct? (And, we are indeed all the esip-sustainabledm list, correct? Co-chairs, please let me know if you’re not on that list. I would prefer to simply send to the list…)

Step 2 would be to create the title and abstract. From my prior email:

Co-chairs, et al, suggestions for titles/abstracts?

Thanks!

HI Anne,

no problem. A session at AGU would be a great continuation of our discussion and may bring in some more perspectives. I'll help organizing.

Thanks, Kerstin! I’ll count you as one. I would love to see 2 others commit to organizing the session, that would be a strong go vote and hopefully require less from each person.

Thanks, Shelley, for adding Corrina. Corrina, my apologies!

Anne,

And Corrina Gries had an interest in this as well. Adding her here to make sure she sees this.

Hi Anne,

I am actually right now at a workshop on 'Repository Collaboration'
where we are talking a lot about ROI. I strongly support the theme of
this session. It is fundamental for sustained support from funders and
the science community, especially these days.

I would be happy to help if there are not enough co-conveners.

The meeting is in New Orleans this year, roughly the 2nd week of December.
