Fascinating! Anna's point about NOAA policy on use of someone's NOAA google apps account puts a lot of things in perspective.

I was wondering wny I couldn't do a hangout with someone using their google apps for nonprofits account, and she told me that she was getting this error:

Google plus is not available for your organization (turningthewheel.org). Please contact admin to enable this service.

That puzzled me. But now I can imagine all kinds of reasons why some organizations might not want their people logging in to various apps, social networks, etc essentially with their "work" ID badge on. Possible issues of seeming to represent the organization, confusion leading to leaks of internal information, etc.

And of course similar issues arise with use of organization email addresses etc.

On the other hand, with a CU google apps for education id, I can join google plus. So different organizations handle it differently.

Of course, Facebook doesn't even allow anyone to have a separate "work" identity - you get one account, period, as I understand it. Or is that not true?

So I can imagine folks, or their employers, wanting them to use their private google id for some activities, and/or wanting to allow them to join only certain "federated" google plus communities if that sort of thing ever comes to pass....

And of course, LinkedIn is all about having a work-related identity that is your own.

More complicated than I thought.... And worth some input from some deep thinkers on the topic!
