The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is preparing for its
Fourth Annual Meeting to be held August 3 though 5, 2003 at the University
of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, with an optional skills workshop on
August 2. The meeting, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, will
focus on the theme "Broadening DLESE."  To provide input to planning for
the meeting and to apply for funding, please visit

 THE PLANNING COMMITTEE NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU BY JANUARY 29, 2003.

The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is a
community-centered resource for anyone interested in learning about the
Earth. This year's annual meeting will focus on "Broadening DLESE."
Specific goals are to develop strategies to:

SE
=B7    Facilitate and encourage efforts to develop Earth science data/t=
ools
for educational use
=B7    Expand DLESE's collection of excellent Earth science educational=

materials
=B7    Broadening the ties between research and educational practice.

Who should attend?
We hope for strong participation from teachers at all levels, curriculu=
m
developers, materials developers, content/data providers, scientists,
service providers, evaluators, administrators and library creators. Thi=
s
meeting will provide a unique opportunity for these stakeholders to
collaborate and participate in DLESE's continuing development.

Goals for participants and for DLESE:
As an attendee, you will be asked to choose a broad strand and suggest =
a
specific topic within that strand as the focus for your participation i=
n
the meeting. The goal of the meeting is for groups representing each st=
rand
to explore issues regarding broadening the use of DLESE. Strands will
develop strategies and plans to:
=B7    Increase the number and diversity of users and contributors to D=
LESE
=B7    Develop ideas and plans for facilitating and encouraging the
development of Earth science data/tools for educational use
=B7    Identify needed content for DLESE and develop plans to develop t=
hat
content
=B7    Build connections between research and educational practice

Each strand will contribute to the development of an overall strategic =
plan
for "Broadening DLESE." Ongoing interaction among strand group members
following the meeting will be supported by communication tools and web
services available through DLESE to foster continuing collaboration.

Optional skills workshop:
A skills workshop will be offered prior to the meeting on Saturday, Aug=
ust
2. These sessions will be focused on activities designed to teach speci=
fic
skills. The topics of the skills workshop will depend on your requests =
and
our resources. The sessions could address technical as well as pedagogi=
cal
skills.

Funding:
Funding will be available for a limited number of attendees to the meet=
ing.
This funding will include airfare, lodging in the University of Colorad=
o
dorms and meals. Funding requests will be prioritized based on need and=
 to
achieve balance between educators from all venues, disciplines, and div=
erse
backgrounds, developers from the full range of collections and services=
,
and librarians and education specialists
