Join us this Friday (9/20) at 2 pm ET/11 am PT for ESIP's next 'Data to
Action' Webinar, which will include 2 parts:

*2019 NOAA Environmental Data Management Workshop Recap*
Join us for a recap of the very recent NOAA Environmental Data Management
Workshop, held September 4-5, 2019 in Seattle, WA. The theme for the 2019
meeting was 'Unleashing NOAA’s Data as a Strategic Asset for Science,
Service,
Stewardship and Innovation'. The workshop built on past work by providing
training, highlighting progress, identifying issues, fostering discussions,
and determining where new technologies can be applied in the management of
environmental data and information at NOAA.

*Speakers: *Kim Valentine, Acting NOAA Deputy Geospatial Information
Officer; Eugene Burger, PI Data Integrations Group at NOAA Pacific Marine
Environmental Laboratory

*New Approaches to Dealing with Increasing Volumes of Data for Numerical
Weather Prediction*
As Machine Learning and in particular Deep Learning applications continue
to grow across a variety of fields, the team at the NOAA Earth System
Research Laboratory (ESRL) is researching the application of these
techniques for processing of satellite observation data. With the recent
launch of new satellites, the data volume has increased by orders of
magnitude and can be difficult to process in a timely manner using
traditional methods. Deep Learning has shown promising advancements to
significantly improve both processing speed and scientific accuracy of
results. This presentation will provide an overview of research efforts at
ESRL into the application of deep learning to improve satellite data
assimilation, object detection and classification, along with the
challenges we face, and where the team at ESRL sees these applications
heading into the future.

*Speaker:* Jebb Stewart, Chief, Informatics, Visualization, and Outreach
Section at NOAA/ESRL Global Systems Division

The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP <https://www.esipfed.org/>)
2019 Webinar Series, *Data to Action: Increasing the Use and Value of Earth
Science Data and Information*, explores activities within and outside of
ESIP that contribute to increasing the use and value of Earth science data and
information by addressing three main questions: How do these activities
contribute to increasing the use and value of Earth science data and
information? What are quantitative and qualitative ways that can be used to
assess and measure this use and value? And, what are the challenges and
opportunities that currently exist in further increasing the use and value
of Earth science data and information? Learn more here
