DCC in collaboration with Purdue Data Curation Profiles
The DCC are involved in an IMLS grant with the Data Curation Profiles team at Purdue University Libraries. The work is based on our shared interest in engaging researchers to identify their support requirements for RDM, through the Data Asset Framework and Data Curation Profiles toolkits. We plan to build a tool to bridge the gap between data producers and data curators, and join up the active phases of data management with longer-term curation and preservation activities. 'Transferring Information Know-How' from InformALL
DCC participates in the InformALL steering group and is pleased to promote its latest report<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=883f428adf&e=134a335702>, on the importance of information literacy skills to employability. The initiative is hosted by the Research Information Network which aims to encourage interest and ability in the skills usually referred to as ‘information literacy’. Although the sample used here is small, the report displays some interesting findings.

What we've been up to this month
________________________________

September was a particularly active month in terms of RDM related events and workshops. DCC staff were out and about at key events. A selection of our activities is listed below with links to further details.

Research and Enterprise Network for Universities Autumn Workshop
Alex gave an overview of the RDM resources offered by DCC at the RENU Autumn Workshop on 17 September. His presentation<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=cbe0f34944&e=134a335702> reviewed guidance and tools available for the various stages of the research lifecycle as well as institution-level strategy and planning.

DCC at European Research Council workshop
Sarah presented on the DCC's work to support managing and sharing research data at the ERC workshop on Research Data Management and Sharing<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=10115ec34a&e=134a335702> in Brussels. Her presentation<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=408043ad69&e=134a335702> covered the benefits and drivers for RDM and pointed to relevant tools and resources. The event attracted 150 participants representing EU funding bodies, researchers, research institutions and publishers.

DCC at Research Data Alliance 4th Plenary Meeting
Kevin, Angus, Alex, Sarah, Joy and Laura attended the RDA 4th Plenary Meeting<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=e58adb1080&e=134a335702> in Amsterdam which attracted about 500 people from around the globe and featured an overview of the outputs starting to emerge from early working groups. The number of new Interest Groups and Working Groups being proposed has been growing steadily over the past year or more, indicating that while we are making good progress with our approaches to managing, sharing and curating research data, a lot of work still needs to be done.

Joy also participated in the Knowledge Exchange<http://dcc.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=2d44744d46&e=134a335702> research data group meeting held as a satellite event of the RDA Plenary.

RECODE workshop on policy recommendations for open access to research data
Sarah’s talk<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=09937d5538&e=134a335702> at the RECODE project workshop<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=80900628bb&e=134a335702> in Amsterdam covered initiatives to open up access to research data at the University of Glasgow and the DCC. The workshop saw the release of the RECODE project's draft policy recommendations for open access to research data in Europe. These suggest actions that a range of different stakeholders should adopt to help support the cultural change needed to ensure an open data future.

Third EUDAT Conference
Alex was also in Amsterdam at the Third EUDAT Conference<http://dcc.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=ea0153433b&e=134a335702> to give a brief overview of the project to set up a Research Data Registry and Discovery Service for the UK, and reflected on the lessons the team have learned about ensuring the quality of data harvested from multiple sources. The talk<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=799c9caab6&e=134a335702> was illustrated with examples of problems that had been encountered.

Data Seal of Approval conference
Angus participated in the DSA conference in Amsterdam which reported that the Data Seal of Approval<http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=7057e81b8e&e=134a335702> is gaining ground as a first step that data repositories can take to international recognition as a Trusted Digital Repository, within a framework supported by the EU. The conference gave a really useful update on moves to partner with the World Data System to offer a worldwide cross-disciplinary standard, and provided overviews of the certification criteria and peer review process.

DCC attend Urban Big Data Centre inaugural workshop
Sarah, Laura and Joy attended the UBDC's inaugural workshop <http://dcc.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=3621889272&e=134a335702> held in Glasgow last month. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Urban Big Data centre (UBDC) will make data collected by business and local government organisations available to academic researchers.
RDM in Denmark - DEIC14
Kevin was an invited speaker at the annual conference of the Danish e-infrastructure cooperation<http://dcc.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dfcae3470db3a4ac2196a3671&id=7443a480f9&e=134a335702> in Middelfart, Denmark. He described developments in policy, tools and services to encourage reuse of data from research and public fields in the UK and elsewhere. Denmark is in the late stages of developing a national initiative in RDM and is keen to build on successful models from elsewhere.

3rd annual LSDMA
On 7 October, Martin gave an overview of the DCC's work at the 3rd annual LSDMA (Large-Scale Data Management and Analysis) Symposium in Karlsruhe, highlighting relevant activities and resources developed as part of our national and international partnerships and liaison . This year's event was on the theme of "The Challenge of Big Data in Science".
