Sorry for the late notice, but this colloquium should be of interest
to our group. It is at noon ET today and available via webcast
(hopefully that will work) and telephone (which would probably be of
little interest given the subject matter).

Description:
Science visualization is an essential component of communicating science.
Dr. Morin will discuss a range of visualization techniques for Earth science
in the classroom and informal education spaces such as museums.

About our Speaker:
Paul Morin specializes in earth-science visualization at the University of
Minnesota, Department of Geology and Geophysics and the National Center of
Earth Surface Dynamics. His interests have to do with the effect of artistic
technique and technology on the efficacy of visualizations in the hands of
students. Paul co-founded the GeoWall Consortium, a group of over 200
teaching institutions using visualization and stereo projection in the
classroom. Paul has been instrumental in bringing earth science
visualization to science museums around the world. He is a co-investigator
and co- developer of Water Planet, a 5,000 to 10,000 square foot traveling
exhibit about water's role in shaping Earth. He was a major contributor of
interactive visualizations to the NAGT-sponsored laboratory manual for
Physical Geology. For several years, he has been an NAGT distinguished
speaker, visiting universities and colleges to present talks on the role of
visualization in geology courses. He is regarded by many people as one of
the top visualization developers in the geosciences. Other professional
interests include the visualization of data sources that are traditionally
viewed as being too complex for students to understand, such as
three-dimensional spherical convection, seismic tomography, and
paleontology. He is currently the director of the Antarctic Geospatial
Information Center in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the
University of Minnesota.
